My parents were Sarah and Bertie Thomas Cloake. They had a little business in Union Street, Torquay selling mixed goods. In addition, Dad sold insurance. Dad's lifelong ambition was to emigrate to New Zealand and buy a farm.
I was born in Newton Abbott near Torquay, Devon England on 18 June 1912.
The Decision to Emigrate
Finally, when I was 8 months old, Dad sailed for New Zealand on the S.S. Corinthic, arriving in Wellington in March 1913. My mother and I followed, also on the S.S. Corinthic, on 13 September 1913 from Southampton. The fare was 26 pounds.
